The Semi-Annual Split: Why Amex Hotel Credits Punish Procrastinators
The Semi-Annual Split: Why Amex Hotel Credits Punish Procrastinators
Some credits split the year in half: use the first half by June 30, the second half by December 31. No rollover between halves. The pattern is always the same — the first half gets used, the second half gets forgotten, and the money evaporates on New Year's Eve.
Which credit cards have semi-annual credits?
Four credits split the year into halves: the Amex Platinum hotel credit ($600/year = $300 per half), the Amex Gold Resy credit ($100/year = $50 per half), the Chase Sapphire Reserve dining credit ($300/year = $150 per half), and the Chase Sapphire Reserve StubHub/viagogo credit ($300/year = $150 per half). No rollover between halves — $50 to $300 per half-year dies if you don't spend it in its half.
- Amex Platinum hotel credit: $600/year = $300 per half. Prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings (2-night minimum for THC) through Amex Travel. The halves reset on January 1 and July 1 each year.
- Amex Gold Resy credit: $100/year = $50 per half. Eligible U.S. Resy restaurants. Same January 1 / July 1 split.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve dining credit: $300/year = $150 per half. Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables restaurants (bookable through OpenTable).
- Chase Sapphire Reserve StubHub/viagogo credit: $300/year = $150 per half. Concert and event tickets, through December 31, 2027. One-time activation required.
Four credits, same trap: $50 to $300 per half-year that dies if you don't spend it in its half.
Why does the second half of semi-annual credits go unclaimed?
The first half has urgency built in — the card's benefits just refreshed in January. By July, life happened: the second $300 hotel half sits there while you tell yourself you'll book something in the fall. Then it's December 20, every hotel is expensive or sold out, and the credit dies unused.
The math of procrastination on the Platinum alone: miss the second hotel half and you've left $300 on the table — a third of the $895 annual fee, gone because of a calendar.
How do you use both halves of a semi-annual credit?
Don't wait for July. In January, plan the whole year: book half 1 spending (January–June) and half 2 spending (July–December) now. The rule: the second half gets scheduled in July, not December — if it's not on the calendar by August, assume it's gone and prove yourself wrong.
Don't wait for July. In January, plan the whole year:
Half 1 (January 1 – June 30):
- Book one qualifying hotel stay (Platinum: $300; covers the half).
- Eat at one Resy restaurant (Gold: $50; one dinner covers it).
- Reserve holders: one Exclusive Tables dinner ($150) and grab StubHub tickets for a spring/summer show ($150).
Half 2 (July 1 – December 31):
- Book the second hotel stay in July, not December. Prices are better, availability is better, and it's done.
- Second Resy dinner — make it a birthday dinner, an anniversary, anything with a date attached.
- Reserve holders: fall concert tickets and a holiday dinner.
The rule: the second half gets scheduled in July, not December. If it's not on the calendar by August, assume it's gone and prove yourself wrong.
Practical bullets:
- The Platinum hotel credit's halves are January 1 and July 1 — not your card anniversary. Mark both.
- The Hotel Collection requires a 2-night minimum stay. A one-night stay doesn't trigger the credit — that's a separate trap inside the trap.
- The Reserve's StubHub credit needs a one-time activation first. No activation, no credit, either half.
- Resy credit works on takeout from eligible restaurants — it doesn't have to be a sit-down dinner.
What are the traps of semi-annual credits?
The traps: treating the second half as "plenty of time," the 2-night minimum on The Hotel Collection (one-night bookings don't count), forgetting the Reserve's one-time StubHub activation (neither half works without it), and December panic booking at peak prices for a hotel you don't want.
- Treating the second half as "plenty of time." Six months feels long in July. It's gone by December.
- The 2-night minimum on The Hotel Collection. One-night bookings don't count. Check before you book.
- Forgetting the StubHub activation. The Reserve's $300 is split in halves, but neither half works until you activate once via chase.com or the app.
- December panic booking. A hotel you don't want, at peak prices, to "use" a credit is not saving money — it's spending money. Schedule in July instead.
How PerkWatch fits
Semi-annual credits are the hardest to track by memory because the deadline is six months away — far enough to forget, close enough to hurt. PerkWatch gives each half its own progress tracker with its own countdown: the January–June half and the July–December half, tracked separately, with an email 7 days and 1 day before each half expires. Free for one card, $2.99/month or $29/year for unlimited.
Benefit details verified October 3, 2026 against the PerkWatch benefits catalog (last verified against issuer sources 2026-09-24). The Reserve's StubHub credit runs through December 31, 2027. Confirm current terms on americanexpress.com and chase.com before relying on them.
