Hotel Credits Compared: Six Cards, One Rule — Book Through the Portal or Get $0
Six cards in our catalog offer hotel credits totaling up to $1,925 a year. They all share one non-negotiable rule: you must book through the card issuer's travel portal. Book direct with the hotel — even the exact same room — and you get $0. Every card, no exceptions.
Which six cards offer hotel credits?
Six cards offer hotel credits totaling up to $1,925 a year: the Amex Platinum ($600), Chase Sapphire Reserve ($500), U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve ($325), Capital One Venture X ($300), Amex Gold ($100), and Chase Sapphire Preferred ($100). Every one requires booking through the card issuer's travel portal — book direct with the hotel and you get $0.
How does the Amex Platinum hotel credit work?
The Amex Platinum includes a $600/year hotel credit, split into $300 per half-year, for Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection booked through Amex Travel. The Hotel Collection requires a 2-night minimum. The credit resets on January 1 and July 1 each year — not your anniversary.
How to use it: one qualifying stay per half-year. The semi-annual split is the trap: one big trip a year leaves $300 behind.
How does the Chase Sapphire Reserve hotel credit work?
The Chase Sapphire Reserve includes a $500/year hotel credit for The Edit by Chase Travel: up to $250 per qualifying prepaid booking, with a 2-night minimum, two credits per calendar year. Book through Chase Travel's Edit collection.
How to use it: two qualifying 2+ night stays a year. No enrollment needed — but the portal and the 2-night minimum do all the filtering for you.
How does the Capital One Venture X hotel credit work?
The Capital One Venture X includes a $300/year hotel credit that is applied as a discount at checkout in the Capital One Travel portal — not a statement credit afterward, so you see the savings immediately. The credit runs on your cardmember year.
How to use it: book $300+ of travel through the portal once a year. Simplest hotel credit on this list.
How does the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve travel credit work?
The U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve includes a $325/year travel and dining credit that, since December 15, 2025, is restricted to purchases through the U.S. Bank Travel Center. The credit runs on your cardmember year.
How to use it: book through the Travel Center. If your hotel habits are all direct-booking, this credit's value to you dropped sharply in December 2025 — be honest about that.
How does the Amex Gold hotel credit work?
The Amex Gold includes a $100/year hotel credit for The Hotel Collection booked through Amex Travel, with a 2-night minimum and prepaid rates.
How to use it: one qualifying two-night stay a year. Small credit, specific conditions.
How does the Chase Sapphire Preferred hotel credit work?
The Chase Sapphire Preferred includes a $100/year hotel credit for hotels booked through Chase Travel. The credit runs on your account anniversary year, not the calendar year, and it requires no enrollment.
How to use it: one hotel night through the Chase portal per anniversary year. Doubled from $50 in the June 2026 refresh.
How do the six hotel credits compare side by side?
The six hotel credits range from $100 to $600 a year, run on three different reset calendars, and all require the issuer's travel portal. Here is the full comparison:
| Card | Amount | Cycle | Portal | Min. stay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amex Platinum | $600 ($300 × 2) | Semi-annual (Jan 1 / Jul 1) | Amex Travel | 2 nights (THC) |
| Sapphire Reserve | $500 ($250 × 2) | Calendar year | Chase Travel (Edit) | 2 nights |
| Altitude Reserve | $325 | Cardmember year | U.S. Bank Travel Center | None stated |
| Venture X | $300 | Cardmember year | Capital One Travel | None stated |
| Amex Gold | $100 | Annual | Amex Travel (THC) | 2 nights |
| Sapphire Preferred | $100 | Anniversary year | Chase Travel | None stated |
Are hotel credits actually worth it?
Hotel credits are the highest-variance category in all of credit cards. A traveler who books two portal stays a year can clear $1,100 across the Platinum and Reserve alone. Someone who always books direct with Marriott gets $0 from all six combined. The credits don't reward travel — they reward portal travel. Know which one you are.
What are the biggest hotel credit traps?
The five biggest traps: the portal rule is absolute (direct bookings earn nothing), three different reset calendars (semi-annual, calendar year, and anniversary/cardmember year), 2-night minimums on Amex THC and Chase Edit, prepaid-required rates, and the Altitude Reserve's December 2025 Travel Center restriction.
- The portal rule is absolute. Direct bookings earn nothing. This is the #1 reason hotel credits go unused.
- Three different reset calendars. Semi-annual (Platinum), calendar year (Reserve), anniversary/cardmember year (Venture X, Preferred, Altitude Reserve). One card, one calendar is a myth.
- Minimum stays. The 2-night minimums on Amex THC and Chase Edit filter out single-night business trips.
- Prepaid means prepaid. Most of these require paying upfront through the portal — no pay-at-the-hotel rates.
- The Altitude Reserve rule change. Travel Center only since December 2025. Old guides describing the old "any travel/dining" version are stale.
How PerkWatch fits
Six credits, three reset calendars, six portals, four minimum-stay rules. Hotel credits are the single best case for tracking each benefit separately instead of trying to hold it all in your head — every one gets a progress tracker with its own countdown and reset date, with emails 7 days and 1 day before anything expires. Free for one card, $2.99/month or $29/year for unlimited.
Benefit details verified October 3, 2026. Portal requirements, minimum stays, and eligible collections are set by the issuers and change periodically — the Altitude Reserve's Travel Center restriction took effect December 15, 2025. Confirm current terms with each issuer before booking.
