Dining Credits Guide: The Most-Forgotten Category in Credit Cards

Dining Credits Guide: The Most-Forgotten Category in Credit Cards

Dining credits are the category with the most money left unclaimed. Not because the credits are small — they total over $1,300 a year across the cards below — but because almost all of them are monthly, and monthly money evaporates quietly. Nobody notices a missing $10. Twelve missing $10s is $120.

Which cards offer dining credits?

Eight dining credits total over $1,300 a year: the Amex Gold dining credit ($120), the Amex Platinum Resy credit ($400), the Amex Gold Resy credit ($100), the Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables credit ($300), the Sapphire Reserve DoorDash promos ($300), the Sapphire Preferred DoorDash grocery promo ($120), and the Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited DoorDash grocery promos ($40 each). Almost all of them are monthly or quarterly — and monthly money evaporates quietly.

How does the Amex Gold dining credit work?

The Amex Gold includes a $120/year dining credit ($10/month) for Grubhub (including Seamless), Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wonder. Enrollment is required.

How to use it: one $10+ order a month at any of them. The lineup changed April 30, 2026 — Wine.com and Goldbelly are out, Buffalo Wild Wings and Wonder are in. Old guides are wrong about the merchants.

How does the Amex Platinum Resy credit work?

The Amex Platinum includes a $400/year Resy dining credit ($100/quarter) for eligible U.S. Resy restaurants, paid with the card. No reservation is needed — takeout counts. Enrollment is required.

How to use it: one good dinner a quarter. Easiest large credit on this list to actually use, if you live near Resy restaurants.

How does the Amex Gold Resy credit work?

The Amex Gold includes a $100/year Resy dining credit ($50 semi-annual) for eligible U.S. Resy restaurants — the same program as above, with a smaller amount and a half-year cycle. Enrollment is required.

How to use it: one dinner per half-year. Don't forget the second half exists.

How does the Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables credit work?

The Sapphire Reserve includes a $300/year dining credit ($150 semi-annual) at restaurants in the Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables program (bookable through OpenTable). It posts automatically on qualifying charges — no enrollment is needed.

How to use it: eat at a participating restaurant once per half-year. Check the current list; it's curated, not every OpenTable restaurant.

How do the Sapphire Reserve DoorDash promos work?

The Sapphire Reserve includes $25/month in DoorDash promos ($300/year): one $5 promo for restaurant orders plus two $10 promos for grocery, convenience, and retail orders. DashPass activation is required, and the promos run through December 31, 2027.

How to use it: three promos a month is fiddly — anchor one to a recurring grocery order so at least $10 is automatic, then use the restaurant $5 when you order in.

How does the Sapphire Preferred DoorDash promo work?

The Sapphire Preferred includes a $10/month DoorDash grocery promo ($120/year): $10 off one grocery or convenience order per month, through December 31, 2027. DashPass activation is required. (Restaurant promos are Reserve-only — the Preferred doesn't get them.)

How to use it: one grocery order a month through DoorDash. $120 a year — more than the card's $95 fee.

How do the Freedom cards' DoorDash promos work?

The Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited each include a $10/quarter DoorDash grocery promo ($40/year): the same $10 grocery/convenience promo, but quarterly instead of monthly, through December 31, 2027. DashPass activation is required.

How to use it: one grocery order per quarter. Small, but both cards have no annual fee — it's free money if you remember.

How much are dining credits really worth?

A household running the Gold and the Reserve could be looking at $820 a year in dining credits. Realistic capture for most people: 60–70%, because the monthly ones leak. The leak is the story of this entire category.

Credit Full annual value
Amex Gold dining ($10/mo) $120
Platinum Resy ($100/q) $400
Gold Resy ($50/semi-annual) $100
Reserve Exclusive Tables ($150/semi-annual) $300
Reserve DoorDash ($25/mo) $300
Preferred DoorDash grocery ($10/mo) $120
Freedom Flex/Unlimited DoorDash ($10/q) $40 each

What are the biggest dining credit traps?

The five biggest traps: monthly credits quietly expire ($10 here, $25 there — hundreds together), the Gold's merchant lineup changed in April 2026, Resy and Exclusive Tables are curated lists (not every restaurant qualifies), DoorDash promos need DashPass activated first, and most DoorDash promos sunset on December 31, 2027.

  1. Monthly credits are where money goes to die. $10 here, $25 there — each miss feels like nothing, and together they're hundreds.
  2. The Gold's merchant lineup changed in April 2026. If your "dining credit" mental map still includes Wine.com, update it.
  3. Resy and Exclusive Tables are curated lists. Not every restaurant qualifies. Check before you count the credit as used.
  4. DoorDash promos need DashPass activated first. No activation, no promos — on any Chase card.
  5. Most DoorDash promos sunset December 31, 2027. They're generous now and gone later. Don't build permanent habits on temporary credits.
