Q4 2026 Categories Are Live: What the New Discover it Secured Earns Right Now

The new Discover it Secured Cash Back launched October 5 — right as Q4 began. That timing matters, because the card's headline perk (5% back on rotating categories) is live right now in three categories: Entertainment, Restaurants, and Utilities, through December 31, 2026.

If you just got the card, here's what to do this week.

Do you need to activate the Discover it Secured 5% categories?

Yes — the 5% is not automatic and not retroactive. Log into your Capital One account (new Discover cards are managed through Capital One since the acquisition), find the quarterly activation, and turn it on. Thirty seconds. Every purchase in the bonus categories from this point forward earns 5%; everything before activation earned 1%, and there's no backdating.

What are the Q4 2026 Discover it Secured categories?

Entertainment, Restaurants, and Utilities, running October 1 through December 31, 2026. Entertainment covers streaming services, movie tickets, concerts, and similar. Restaurants covers dining out and takeout. Utilities covers electric, gas, water, and similar bills. On everything outside these categories, the card earns 1% — automatically, no activation needed.

  • Entertainment — streaming services, movie tickets, concerts, and similar. If your streaming subscriptions are monthly, moving them onto this card means 5% on bills you're paying anyway.
  • Restaurants — dining out and takeout. This is usually the easiest category to max out without changing your habits.
  • Utilities — electric, gas, water, and similar bills. The quiet winner: recurring bills you can't avoid, now earning 5%.

On everything outside these categories, the card earns 1% — automatically, no activation needed.

Why is Q4 the best quarter to start the Discover it Secured card?

Two reasons. First, the categories are all everyday spending — no manufactured purchases required to earn the full 5%. Second, if you're in your first year, every dollar of Q4 cash back counts toward the end-of-year Cashback Match, which doubles it. Q4 spending at 5%, matched, is effectively 10% back on restaurants and bills.

What is the trap to avoid with Q4 categories?

The quarter ends December 31 whether you activated or not. Unactivated category spending earns 1%, and nobody notifies you that you left money behind — the 5% just quietly doesn't happen. This is the single most common way Discover cardholders leave money unclaimed, on the secured card and the unsecured one alike.

New card, new quarter, same rule: activate first, spend second. Set a progress tracker for January 1, when Q1 2027 categories go live — and do it all again. Free for one card, $2.99/month or $29/year for unlimited.
