The 5-Minute Monthly Routine So No Perk Expires Unused

The 5-Minute Monthly Routine So No Perk Expires Unused

Everything in this blog series comes down to one habit. Not eleven credits, not four cycle lengths, not two clocks — one five-minute routine, once a month, that catches everything before it expires.

Here's the manual version. Then the automatic one.

What is the 5-minute monthly routine for credit card perks?

On the first of the month, spend five minutes: minutes 1–2 check this month's monthly credits, minute 3 glances at the quarterly and semi-annual countdowns, minute 4 confirms enrollments are still active, and minute 5 checks the calendar for cliffs — things that end permanently, not cyclically.

What do you check in minutes 1–2 of the routine?

Open each card's benefit page and confirm last month's credits posted — then spend what's left of this month's before it vanishes.

  • Amex Platinum: $25 digital entertainment, $15 Uber Cash (+$20 in December), ~$12.95 Walmart+
  • Amex Gold: $10 dining credit, $10 Uber Cash, $7 Dunkin'
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: $25 DoorDash promos, $10 Lyft, $10 Peloton
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: $10 DoorDash grocery promo
  • Blue Cash Preferred: $10 Disney Bundle

Anything unspent from last month is gone — don't mourn it, just make sure this month's gets used. The fastest wins: put subscriptions on auto-pay (entertainment, Disney Bundle) and route one recurring order through the monthly credits (a standing grocery order absorbs DoorDash promos automatically).

What do you check in minute 3 of the routine?

You don't need to act — just look at the quarterly, semi-annual, and annual countdowns, and flag anything in the current period that's still unused with less than half the period left.

  • Quarterly (reset Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct): Platinum Resy $100, lululemon $75
  • Semi-annual (reset Jan 1 / Jul 1): Platinum hotel $300, Gold Resy $50, Reserve dining $150, Reserve StubHub $150
  • Annual (calendar year): airline credits, Oura, CLEAR+, BofA $100, Prestige $250
  • Annual (anniversary year): Reserve $300 travel, Preferred $100 hotel, Venture X $300, Altitude Reserve $325

The question each month: is anything in the current period still unused with less than half the period left? If yes, schedule it now — not "soon."

What do you check in minute 4 of the routine?

Enrollments. Cards don't notify you when an enrollment lapses — after a product change, a card replacement, or an app update, a credit can quietly stop working while you assume it's fine. Once a month, verify the big ones are still enrolled.

  • Amex: airline selection (one airline, changeable in January), Resy, dining, lululemon, entertainment, Oura
  • Chase: DashPass activation, StubHub activation, Lyft link, Peloton activation, Apple subscriptions
  • Priority Pass memberships (one-time enrollments — confirm once, then annually)

What do you check in minute 5 of the routine?

The calendar for cliffs — not resets, but things that end permanently, not cyclically. Anything within 90 days takes priority.

  • December 31, 2026: Preferred Apple TV activation deadline; Reserve $250 Select-hotels one-timer expires
  • June 22, 2027: Reserve Apple TV+/Apple Music ends
  • September 30, 2027: Reserve Lyft credit ends
  • December 31, 2027: Reserve DoorDash/StubHub/Peloton/DashPass ends; Preferred DoorDash/DashPass ends

If a cliff is within 90 days, it jumps to the top of the list.

Does the 5-minute monthly routine actually work?

It works — but almost nobody does it. Monthly tasks compete with everything else in your life, and "check credit card benefits" ends up last in that contest. That's not a character flaw; it's just how attention works. The entire credit-card industry is built on the bet that you won't do this.

Is there an automatic version of the monthly perk routine?

Yes — that's what PerkWatch is: the routine, done for you, without the monthly discipline. Every credit gets a progress tracker on its correct cycle, email reminders go out 7 days and 1 day before anything expires, enrollment checks surface credits that need activation, sunset dates and cliffs get flagged ahead of time, and closed cards stay tracked.

This is what PerkWatch is: the routine, done for you, without the monthly discipline.

  • Every credit gets a progress tracker on its correct cycle — monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, calendar-year, anniversary-year. You see at a glance what's used and what's left.
  • Email reminders go out 7 days and 1 day before anything expires. Not a generic newsletter — a specific "your $25 DoorDash promo expires in 7 days" email.
  • Enrollment checks surface credits that need activation before they can work.
  • Sunset dates and cliffs get flagged ahead of time — the December 2026 deadlines, the 2027 expirations, the DashPass auto-billing switchover.
  • Closed cards stay tracked. Prestige, Altitude Reserve, Classic Green — full tracking, same as everything else.

The manual routine is free and takes five minutes. The automatic version is free for one card, $2.99/month or $29/year for unlimited. Either way, the goal is the same: no perk expires unused, ever.

How do you start the monthly perk routine today?

Whichever version you pick, start today: write down your cards and each card's anniversary date, enroll in every credit that needs it — today, not this weekend — put one subscription on auto-pay per monthly credit, set a recurring first-of-the-month reminder titled "5-minute perk check," or skip the maintenance forever and let the trackers do it.

  1. Write down your cards and each card's anniversary date.
  2. Enroll in every credit that needs it — today, not this weekend.
  3. Put one subscription on auto-pay per monthly credit.
  4. Set a recurring first-of-the-month reminder titled "5-minute perk check."
  5. Or skip steps 1–4's maintenance forever and let the trackers do it.
