The Enrollment Trap: Why Most Unused Credits Were Never Broken — They Were Never Turned On
The Enrollment Trap: Why Most Unused Credits Were Never Broken — They Were Never Turned On
Here's the uncomfortable truth about credit card perks: the #1 reason credits go unused isn't that people forget to spend them. It's that they never activated them in the first place. The credit sat there, fully funded, for twelve months — and paid out $0, because nobody flipped the switch.
Nearly every credit card benefit requires some form of one-time enrollment before it works. Not "sign up for the card" — a separate, per-benefit activation buried in the card's app or website. Miss it, and you can spend at the right merchants all year and get nothing back.
What is the enrollment trap on American Express cards?
American Express requires the most enrollment steps of any issuer, and it's not close. On the Platinum and Gold, almost every credit requires activation in your Amex account (Account → Benefits) before a single dollar flows:
Amex Platinum — enroll in each of these:
- Airline incidental credit: select your qualifying airline (and you can only change it once a year, usually in January)
- Resy credit, digital entertainment credit, lululemon credit, Oura Ring credit, Equinox credit: each needs separate enrollment
- Uber Cash: add the Platinum as a payment method in your Uber account
- Hotel credit, Walmart+ credit, Uber One credit: check each in your account — enroll if the option is there
The one that doesn't need it: the CLEAR+ credit is automatic. Everything else — assume enrollment required until your account says otherwise.
Amex Gold — enroll in all five:
- Dining credit, Uber Cash (add card to Uber account), Dunkin' credit, Resy credit: confirmed enrollment required
- Hotel Collection credit: enrollment status wasn't confirmed in our sources — check your account and enroll if prompted
That's up to a dozen separate enrollments across the two cards. Nobody does all of them on day one without a checklist. Which is why nobody does all of them.
Which Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits require enrollment?
Five benefits require activation on the Chase Sapphire Reserve: DoorDash/DashPass, StubHub/viagogo, Lyft, Peloton, and Apple TV+ / Apple Music. The Reserve's $300 travel credit and hotel/dining credits are automatic — everything lifestyle-related needs a tap.
- DoorDash: activate DashPass via DoorDash or Chase — unlocks the $300/yr in promos and the free membership
- StubHub/viagogo: one-time activation via chase.com or the Chase app
- Lyft: link the card in the Lyft app
- Peloton: activation required for the membership credit
- Apple TV+ / Apple Music: one-time activation per service through the Chase app (both run through June 22, 2027 — activate once and you're set)
How often does Discover require activation of the 5% categories?
Discover requires activation every quarter — not once, four times a year. Activate via your online account or 1-800-DISCOVER. Unactivated spending in a bonus category earns 1%, not 5%.
On up to $1,500 of category spending per quarter, that's up to $75 per quarter left on the table — $300 a year — for skipping a 30-second activation.
This is the single most commonly missed recurring activation in the no-annual-fee tier.
What needs enrollment on the Capital One Venture X?
Two one-time enrollments: Priority Pass (enrollment required before your first lounge visit) and Hertz President's Circle (enroll via the Capital One site or app). Do them in week one and never think about them again — but "never think about them" only works if you did them once.
- Priority Pass: enrollment required before your first lounge visit
- Hertz President's Circle: enroll via the Capital One site or app
Both are once-ever.
What is the day-one enrollment checklist for a new card?
New card arrives? Before you spend a dollar, work this list: enroll in every credit in your Amex Benefits page (plus airline selection and the Uber/Lyft apps), activate DashPass, StubHub, Lyft, Peloton, and Apple services on the Reserve, activate Discover's current-quarter 5% categories, and enroll in Priority Pass and Hertz President's Circle on the Venture X.
Amex (any card):
- Log in → Benefits → enroll in every credit listed
- Platinum only: select your airline for the incidental credit
- Add the card to your Uber account
- Add the card to your Lyft account (Reserve)
Chase Sapphire Reserve:
- Activate DashPass
- Activate StubHub credit on chase.com
- Link card in Lyft app
- Activate Peloton credit
- Activate Apple TV+ and Apple Music
Discover it:
- Activate this quarter's 5% categories (then set a quarterly reminder)
Venture X:
- Enroll in Priority Pass
- Enroll in Hertz President's Circle
Every card:
- Screenshot or save the enrollment confirmations — if a credit doesn't post later, you'll want proof
What are the four enrollment traps?
The four enrollment traps are: enrollment is not spending (activating a credit doesn't use it — both steps are required), the Platinum's airline selection locks for a full year (you can usually only change it in January), Discover's activation is quarterly while every other enrollment on this list is once-ever, and assuming credits are automatic when they aren't.
- Enrollment ≠ spending. Activating the credit doesn't use it — it just makes it possible to use it. Two separate steps, both required.
- The airline selection locks annually. On the Platinum, you pick one airline (usually in January) and you're stuck with it for the year. Pick wrong and the $200 credit is stranded.
- Discover's activation is quarterly, not once. Every other enrollment on this list is once-ever. Discover's is four times a year, forever.
- "I thought it was automatic" is the most expensive sentence in credit cards. Assume nothing is automatic until the issuer says so in writing.
How PerkWatch fits
Enrollment is a one-time event, but it's the one-time event that determines whether a year of credits pays out or pays $0. PerkWatch's first-run checklist surfaces every enrollment step for each card you add — airline selection, DashPass activation, quarterly Discover activation — so nothing ships without being turned on. Then the progress trackers take over for the spending side. Free for one card, $2.99/month or $29/year for unlimited.
Benefit details verified October 3, 2026. Enrollment requirements are per current issuer terms; the Amex Gold Hotel Collection credit's enrollment status could not be confirmed — check your Amex account. Confirm current terms with the card issuer before applying — benefits change.
